Search "boob tape" and you will find rolls at £12 to £20 for five metres. Search "kinesiology tape" and the same five metres is £4.99. They are, with one or two honest caveats, the same product. This is what the difference actually is, which one to buy for a backless dress, and the mistakes that make people swear off tape after one bad night.

The step-by-step patterns for a lift, a backless dress and a strapless top are on our boob tape guide. This post is about the choice.

3 rolls for £14.97, delivered free Pre-cut 20 strips with a dispenser box. Beige shown — see all colours & designs. £4.95 delivery on 1 or 2 rolls.

What boob tape is made of

Turn a branded boob tape roll over and read the label: cotton or rayon, a little spandex, a medical-grade acrylic adhesive, latex-free, water-resistant. That is the specification of kinesiology tape, the elastic strapping physios have used on knees and shoulders since the 1970s. The boob-tape brands buy the same class of material, sometimes cut it a little wider, put nipple covers in the box and print instructions for breasts instead of hamstrings. The mark-up pays for the box.

The genuine differences

Branded boob tape Pre-cut kinesiology tape
Width 5cm, some 7.5cm 5cm — cut down the middle for 2.5cm
Length 5m, you cut every piece 5m, 20 strips pre-cut at 25cm, dispenser
Nipple covers Usually in the box Buy separately (£3–£5 for reusable silicone)
Adhesive strength Tuned for one wear Tuned to hold 5–7 days through sweat
Colours Two or three nudes, black Beige, black, white, plus eight colours and printed designs
Price for 5m £12–£20 £4.99 · 3 rolls £14.97 delivered

Two of those rows matter. The 7.5cm width some brands offer covers more breast per strip, which helps above a DD — with 5cm tape you use an extra strip instead. And the adhesive on sports tape is stronger than it needs to be for a night out, which is the one place kinesiology tape is genuinely different: it will hold longer than you want it to, so removal has to be done properly.

Which to buy

If you are taping for one wedding and want everything in one box, a branded kit with covers is fine and you will pay for the convenience. If you go out more than twice a year, buy the kinesiology tape and a pair of reusable silicone nipple covers. Three rolls for £14.97 is 60 pre-cut strips — at two strips a side that is fifteen nights out, for less than one branded roll.

Pre-cut matters more than it sounds. Boob taping is done one-handed in front of a mirror while the other hand holds the lift. Cutting strips from a roll with scissors while doing that is how the first attempt goes wrong. Strips that tear off a dispenser at 25cm, with rounded corners already, remove the fiddly part.

The three mistakes

No nipple covers. The adhesive that holds a knee for a week will take skin off a nipple. Every brand tells you this and every first-timer who skips it regrets it. Silicone covers, every time.

Moisturiser. Tape does not stick to lotion, oil, fake tan or deodorant. Skin has to be clean and completely dry, and that means applying the tape before the body lotion, not after.

Ripping it off. Soak the tape in oil — coconut, baby, olive — for five to ten minutes, then peel downward slowly while pressing the skin. Dry removal is what causes the red marks and the horror stories. Done with oil it comes off cleanly.

A note on wear time

Our tape is rated for five to seven days on a knee. Do not read that as permission on a chest. Breast skin is thinner and more sensitive, the strips are under more tension than a knee strip, and the longer the adhesive sits the harder it releases. Twelve hours, off with oil, a day's rest before re-taping. Treat it as a night-out product that happens to be made to sports-tape standards.

Colour, and costumes

Beige disappears under anything skin-tone or light. Black under black. If a strip is going to show at the edge of a backless outfit, black reads as deliberate where beige reads as a mistake. And if the tape is going to be seen — a Halloween costume, a festival — the printed Talisman designs turn strapping into part of the look: Viking runes, chakra symbols, dreamcatchers, on black or beige, same price.

Patterns, strip counts by cup size and the safety list are on the boob tape guide. Beige and black are £4.99 a roll, three rolls £14.97 delivered free.
