Two rolls of kinesiology tape can look identical in the packet and behave completely differently by Wednesday. The fabric is why.

3 rolls for £14.97, delivered free Pre-cut 20 strips with a dispenser box. Beige shown — see all colours & designs. £4.95 delivery on 1 or 2 rolls.

The two fabrics, plainly

Almost all kinesiology tape is one of two things.

  • Cotton — usually a cotton weave with a little elastane. It is the cheaper substrate and it is what most budget tape uses.
  • Synthetic — usually rayon with a little spandex. Ours is 95% rayon, 5% spandex. Rayon is regenerated cellulose: it comes from wood pulp, but it behaves like a technical fibre rather than a natural one.

Both stretch. Both use a similar acrylic adhesive. The difference is what each one does with water.

What happens when you sweat

Cotton is absorbent. That is the property it is prized for in a towel and the property that works against it on your skin. Sweat goes into the fibre and stays there, held against the skin, right next to the adhesive layer. Wet adhesive is weak adhesive, and the first place it fails is the edges, because that is where the peel force is highest.

That is the whole story behind the classic complaint about cheap tape: it is fine on day one, curling at the corners by day two.

Rayon does the opposite. It wicks moisture along the fibre and releases it to the air, so the tape dries out instead of staying damp. Synthetic dries roughly three times faster than cotton. The adhesive stays dry, the edges stay down.

How long each actually lasts

We publish 5 to 7 days for our synthetic tape, and that is a realistic average with proper skin prep, not a best case.

For comparison, KT Tape publishes 1 to 3 days for its own Original Cotton range. That is their figure for their product, not our estimate of it — and it is a fair reflection of what cotton does.

Cotton Synthetic rayon
Moisture Absorbs and holds it Wicks and dries
Typical wear Short — often days, not a week 5 to 7 days
Showering and swimming Tolerated, shortens wear Fine
Edge lift Common from day two Rare with rounded corners
Takes a printed design Softly, fibres blur the edges Crisply

Water: what is true and what is not

Three different things get collapsed into one word, so it is worth separating them.

The adhesive is waterproof. The fabric is porous — deliberately, so it breathes and dries. The finished tape is water resistant and sweat resistant, not waterproof.

In practice that means showering, swimming and training in it are all fine, and the tape dries rather than staying soggy. Pat the area dry afterwards rather than rubbing it with a towel, which is what actually lifts edges.

Anyone selling you a kinesiology tape as fully waterproof is describing the glue and calling it the product.

Why synthetic normally costs more, and why ours does not

Synthetic substrate is the more expensive raw material, which is why it tends to show up in the branded tapes at £13 to £25 a roll and not in the budget ones.

We use the same class of fabric and sell a roll at £4.99, because we design and specify the tape ourselves and sell direct — no distributor, no marketplace commission. Three rolls is £14.97 delivered free, which is 60 pre-cut strips at 25p each.

How to tell what you are buying

Listings are often vague, so look for these.

  • A stated fibre mix. If it says 95% cotton, it is cotton tape. If it does not say at all, assume cotton.
  • A stated wear time. Anyone confident in a synthetic substrate will say 5 to 7 days. Cotton listings tend to stay quiet or say "up to 3 days".
  • The feel. Cotton tape feels like a soft bandage. Synthetic has a slight sheen and a finer, more technical weave.
  • Beware "cotton-feel". It usually means synthetic marketed to people who expect cotton — which is fine, but check the fibre line.

When cotton is the right choice

Rarely, but not never. Cotton is cheaper per roll, and if you are taping for a single afternoon — a race, a match, one event — a shorter wear time costs you nothing. Some people also simply prefer the softer hand of a cotton weave.

For anything you intend to leave on for days, the fabric is the thing that decides it.

Frequently asked questions

Is rayon natural or synthetic?

Both, depending how you count. Rayon is regenerated cellulose, made from wood pulp, so the raw material is natural but the fibre is manufactured. In tape terms it behaves as a technical synthetic: it wicks and dries rather than absorbing and holding.

Does synthetic tape irritate sensitive skin more than cotton?

Irritation is nearly always down to the adhesive rather than the fabric. Ours is a medical-grade acrylic, latex-free and tested as not sensitizing. If your skin is very reactive, patch test on the inner forearm for 24 hours before a full application, whichever fabric you choose.

Can I shower and swim in synthetic kinesiology tape?

Yes. It is water resistant and sweat resistant. Dry the area gently afterwards — pat, do not rub.

Why does my tape keep peeling at the corners?

Three usual causes, in order: the corners were cut square rather than rounded, the skin had lotion or oil on it, or the tape was not rubbed for 20 to 30 seconds to activate the heat-sensitive adhesive. Fabric is the fourth cause, and the one you cannot fix after the fact.

How much stretch should synthetic tape have?

Ours stretches to 170% of its resting length. That is enough to give proprioceptive feedback and gentle support without restricting range of motion.
