Tape strips: how many you actually need

Most people buy a five metre roll, use it three times, and find it in a drawer eighteen months later. Here is the arithmetic on how much tape a job actually takes, and the cheaper way in if you are not yet sure it helps you.

59p a strip. Mix any colours you like. Flat enough for a kit bag or a first aid tin. Free UK delivery on ten or more.

3 rolls for £14.97, delivered free Pre-cut 20 strips with a dispenser box. Beige shown — see all colours & designs. £4.95 delivery on 1 or 2 rolls.

The short answer

These are the strip counts from our own application guides, not estimates:

What you are taping Strips per application From one roll of 20
Knee 2 10 applications
Shoulder 2 10 applications
Ankle 2 10 applications
Elbow 2 10 applications
Foot and plantar 2 10 applications
Neck 2 10 applications
Lower back 3 6 applications

An application stays on for five to seven days, so one roll is roughly two months of continuous taping for a single area. Tape a knee twice before a race and you have used a tenth of it.

What a strip is

One ready-cut length of tape, 25cm long and 5cm wide, corners rounded, backing paper still on. It is exactly what comes off the roll, because a roll is twenty of them joined together with a dispenser box to tear them from.

Rounded corners matter more than they sound. A square corner catches on a sock or a sleeve, and once a corner lifts the whole strip peels within a day.

You can still cut a strip when a pattern needs it. A Y-strip to frame a kneecap is one strip split up the middle, leaving a 5cm solid anchor at the end. Ten seconds with scissors.

Synthetic, not cotton

Kinesiology tape is usually cotton. Ours is 95% rayon and 5% spandex, and the difference you notice is sweat.

Rayon wicks sweat and dries fast. Cotton soaks it up and holds it against your skin, which is why a cotton strip goes heavy and starts to lift on a long session or a hot day. On a strip you have carried in a bag for the one session that needed it, that matters more rather than less: you want it to last the week you put it on for.

To be exact about water, because three different things get muddled: the fabric is porous, the adhesive is waterproof, and the strip as a whole is water resistant. A shower is fine.

The adhesive is latex-free and has been tested as not sensitizing to skin. There is no glue to apply yourself and none in the envelope. It is already on the strip, under the backing paper.

Two strips fit where a roll never will

A dispenser box is a rigid cube. It is the right thing on a shelf at home, and the wrong thing in a kit bag or a first aid tin.

A strip is flat: 25cm by 5cm on its own backing paper, no thicker than a postcard. Two of them slide into a race belt, the lid pocket of a holdall, a wash bag, or the back of a phone case. You take what the session needs instead of carrying five metres to use fifty centimetres.

  • The first aid tin. Flat enough to sit next to the plasters, where a dispenser box stops the lid shutting. The one in the kitchen drawer, the one in the car, the one in the clubhouse.
  • Training. Two strips in the bag for the knee that grumbles, not the whole roll.
  • Race day. Two on before the start, two spare in the belt in case one lifts at mile nine.
  • Away games and tournaments. A strip each for six players weighs nothing and takes no space.
  • Travel. Flat, dry, nothing to declare, no scissors needed at the other end.
  • Work. A few in a desk drawer for the shoulder that goes on long days.

The adhesive stays covered by its own backing paper until you peel it, so it does not pick up grit and lint in a bag the way the cut end of a part-used roll does.

Read the bottom two rows together. Three rolls delivered costs five pounds more than one roll delivered and gives you three times the tape, so if you already know you will use it, a single roll is the worst of the three.

Strips are not the cheapest tape per strip. They are the cheapest way to get tape at all, and the only way to have ten different colours, or five different Talisman prints, in one envelope.

Buy strips if

  • you have not used kinesiology tape before and want to find out whether it helps you
  • you tape one thing occasionally rather than every week
  • you want it in a bag, a belt or a pocket rather than on a shelf
  • you want to try the printed designs before committing to a roll of one
  • you want a mix of colours

Buy rolls if

  • you tape every week
  • you want the dispenser box to tear from
  • you want the lowest price per strip, which is three rolls at 25p
  • it is for a club, a clinic, or a permanent kit bag
  • you already know which colour you want twenty of

Why nobody else sells strips

Everyone else posts you a whole roll because they have to. A five metre roll is nearly 5cm across, and Royal Mail’s large letter limit is 2.5cm, so a roll always travels as a parcel. Ten flat strips go in an envelope. That is the whole difference, and it is why ten of ours cost less to deliver than one of theirs.

It is not a clever pricing trick. It is the shape of the box.

What arrives

Ten strips, each on its own backing paper, flat in a board-backed envelope. No dispenser box, because the box is what makes a roll a parcel. Plain colours are 59p a strip, printed Talisman designs 69p. Mix the colours however you like. Mix the Talisman prints too, black and beige together, one design per strip.

Packed and posted from Yorkshire. Order before 3pm Monday to Friday and it goes out the same day.

Heal like an athlete

Same tape the roll is cut from. Ten of it, in an envelope.

Free UK delivery on ten strips or three rolls. 30-day returns on unopened rolls in their sealed box.

Common questions

Can I buy kinesiology tape without buying a whole roll?
Yes. We sell loose pre-cut strips in packs of ten, from £5.90 delivered free. Mix any of the ten colours, or any of the five printed Talisman designs. Most sellers offer only whole 5 metre rolls.
How many strips of kinesiology tape do I need?
Two strips for a knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot or neck. Three for a lower back. A pack of ten is about five applications and a roll of twenty is about ten.
How long does one application last?
Five to seven days under normal use, including showering. It depends on the area, the skin and the activity.
What size is one strip?
Each strip is 25cm long and 5cm wide, with rounded corners and a peel-off backing paper. It is the same tape as the roll, cut to the size most people use.
Can I cut a pre-cut strip?
Yes. A Y-strip to frame a kneecap is one strip split up the middle, leaving a 5cm solid anchor at the end. It takes about ten seconds with scissors.
Is the tape cotton or synthetic?
Synthetic. It is 95% rayon and 5% spandex. Rayon wicks sweat and dries fast, where cotton soaks it up and holds it against the skin.
Is kinesiology tape waterproof?
The fabric is porous, the adhesive is waterproof, and the strip as a whole is water resistant. A shower is fine.
Does a strip pack come with a dispenser box?
No. Strips arrive flat in an envelope, each on its own backing paper. The dispenser box comes with the roll, and the box is what makes a roll travel as a parcel rather than a letter.
How much is delivery on strips?
Free on ten strips or more. £1.55 on nine or fewer, because fewer than ten still posts as a Royal Mail large letter.

Kinesiology Sports Tape is an athletic support tape, not a medical device. The wear time given here is typical, not guaranteed, and depends on the area, the skin and the activity. If you have pain that is new, severe or not improving, see a qualified professional rather than taping it.
